Where I’ve Been and a BOOK BLAST!

Lately, I’ve been spending far more time dancing than I have writing.  It might appear that I’ve also shoved reading to the side, but this is not true.  Since finishing From the Ashes by C. J. Archer, book six in The Ministry of Curiosities book series I’ve had the pleasure of beta reading a wonderful alternative history novel which I absolutely adore.  While I can’t divulge anything about my favourite alternative history book, I can share a book that my author friend has a short story in!

This book features classic Fairy Tales with a Science Fiction twist.  Sound like it’s the type of book I’d read?  You bet!  I’m hoping it’s one you would be interested in too.

Check out Circuits and Slippers for a new perspective on well known and loved stories.  If you like Fairy Tale retellings, this will likely be perfect for you.  Get it, love it, and want to chat?  You’re free to contact me, and hey, maybe one of the authors would be willing to drop you a line too.

Synopsis: (From Amazon)
from the ashesWhen Charlie returns to Lichfield, she steps into chaos. The killer is still on the loose, Lady Harcourt’s secret is out, Seth and Gus are gone, and Lady Vickers has come to stay. But nothing compares to the chaos inflicted on Charlie’s heart by seeing Lincoln every day.

Despite their frequent clashes, Lincoln and Charlie manage to work together to narrow their list of suspects. No one can be trusted, especially not the members of the committee who are not what they seem. Long buried pasts are dug up as Charlie and Lincoln attempt to restore peace to Lichfield.

But when danger enters her home, Charlie’s world is shattered.

Review:
I have come to realize I will never get enough of Charlie.  I absolutely adore this series, and this is one of my absolute favourite novels in the series thus far.  Every character is so well developed with such depth that the reader cannot help but empathize, even with the ones who might be villains (most of the time).

The reader gets a better glimpse at Lady Harcourt’s true nature, as well as a more intense understanding of the others that make up The Ministry of Curiosities.  Although Lichfield is growing more full, it still has an intimate feel, and the characters realize more about how they work together, and how they feel about each other.

When I started the novel I was a bit worried at the angle it seemed to take, which was different from where Charlie and Lincoln’s supernatural stories tend to go, but the tying in of characters and situations when Charlie was away was expertly done.  Despite my irritation with Lincoln’s actions and thoughts in the past novel, I do truly feel he redeemed himself.  Charlie and Lincoln remain my favourite literary couple, and I cannot wait to see them continue to investigate more cases of the supernatural.

Review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J. K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
By J. K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany

Star Rating:
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Pages: 320

Date Started: August 19, 2016
Date Finished: August 19, 2016

Synopsis: (From Amazon)
The Eighth Story. Nineteen Years Later.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne,Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Review:
Definitely not what I expected. I’m unsure what I expected, but this was not it. This wasn’t exactly a story so much as it was a short story. For people complaining that it isn’t a “real book” and that it’s only a play, if you read it, you’ll understand why it’s only a play. A lot of things are glanced over, mentioned once or twice and then eluded to without actually showing it (Harry’s relationship with his son James and daughter Lily, constantly compared to how he doesn’t seem to get on well with Albus).

What I did like, quite a lot, was that Albus did have the same spirit as Harry and made friends with someone who seemed as awkward at making friends as him, and stayed loyal to him. I enjoyed getting to see Albus and Scorpiousgo on adventures and get into mischief.

I didn’t like the flashbacks to Harry’s past, things we were supposed to assume had happened between him and his aunt. This detracted in some ways from what we were seen in the 7 Harry Potter books, though some of these flashbacks were an odd sort of foreshadowing.

The play does well to showcase that every action and statement has a consequence, and that it is important to think both before speaking and acting so that you do not do something in haste that you’ll regret.

Overall, I quite liked the story, but I think it would have made a lot more sense if it focused more around Albus and less around the golden trio of Ron, Harry, and Hermione. It was disconcerting to have the trio constantly showing up at Hogwarts which is, for all intents and purposes, much like a boarding school. During the 7 original books, I believe that Lucius Malfoy only showed up to the school a handful of times, and all of those were when there had been a dire emergency/issue going on (think of book two, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

Review of The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher

The Aeronaut’s Windlass
The Cinder Spires Book 1
By Jim Butcher

Star Rating:
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Pages: 640

Date Started: August 2, 2016
Date Finished: August 19, 2016

Synopsis: (From Amazon)aeronauts
Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity. Within their halls, the ruling aristocratic houses develop scientific marvels, foster trade alliances, and maintain fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is damaged in combat, Grimm joins a team of Albion agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring his ship.

And as Grimm undertakes this task, he learns that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake…

Review:
This book was truly amazing.  This new series is what Jim Butcher was born to write.  While the synopsis might lead one to believe that Captain Grimm is the main character, there are a multitude of different people that make up the main force of protagonists, all very different.  Every character introduced has a great level of depth and backstory.  I really enjoy that this book series has multiple main characters that grow as the story progresses.  Given the amount of main characters, a reader is bound to resonate with one, while the majority are all likable (except, of course, the antagonist).

This is truly a coming of age story from the perspective of several different characters, though Grimm and his crew do play a large part in the overall plot.  While some characters are learning how to live in the adult world, others are learning how to deal with problems from their pasts, and all work in conjunction together, despite their apparent honorable or dishonorable ranking.

I will say that this book, while labeled “steampunk”, really doesn’t have any steampunk elements in it, unless you count the air ships (which the main one mentioned, it can be noted, does not run off steam).  That being said, I think this is a brilliant piece of fantasy in a wonderful imaginative new world, and I cannot wait to see what happens to everyone as they reach the end.

Author Information:
The Dresden Files are the first books that Jim Butcher managed to get published.  He is also the author of the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, Cinder spires.  He is a gamer, including tabletop, video games, as well as LARP.  He still lives in his hometown, Independence, Missouri.

Evermore
Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Book 3
By C. J. Archer

Star Rating:
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Pages: 216

Synopsis: (From Amazon)Evermore_Huge
When ghosts begin to disappear from the Otherworld, Emily Chambers and her friends must hunt down those responsible before every last spirit, including Jacob Beaufort, is destroyed and Emily’s livelihood along with them. But there is one thing stopping them – Jacob’s killer.

Weakened and fading fast, the ghost of Jacob Beaufort is determined to save Emily from a bleak and uncertain future. With her family facing financial ruin and the Otherworld in chaos, he knows her only hope is to wed Theo.

As lives and afterlives hang in the balance, Emily is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice, or lose everything she loves.

Review:
This series, overall, was a bit of a disappointment.  I had gotten used to Archer’s style in The Ministry of Curiosities series, and I quite adore that line of books.  This one, I felt that lacked a special spark, and the foreshadowing was too obvious.  Most of what is supposed to be a shocking secret revealed are things I had gathered by the first or second book, and was waiting for Emily to figure it out or for it to be made known.  What I did like, was Theo.  His attitude and actions seem like the very thing a girl in Emily’s position would see and experience with a suitor.

I would give the series as a whole four stars out of five.  I enjoyed them as a quick pulp fiction read.  While the premise was quite original and well done, I appreciate the growth and strength in writing that Archer shows in her later works, namely The Ministry of Curiosities.

Review of Possession by C. J. Archer

Possession
Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Book 2
By C. J. Archer

Star Rating:
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Pages: 180

Synopsis: (From Amazon)possession-1
When the ghost of a notorious killer possesses the body of an upper class youth, London’s pre-eminent medium, Emily Chambers, must exorcise it before the spirit goes on a rampage. As if this isn’t distraction enough, she must fight her feelings for brooding ghost, Jacob Beaufort, who doesn’t like the new man in her life – the handsome and very much alive, Theodore Hyde.

With reputations and lives at stake, Emily discovers that navigating the poorest suburbs of London in search of the evil spirit is almost as dangerous as finding her way in a Society that thinks “freaks” like her belong in the circus.

Review:
I would have liked more interaction with Beaufort shadowing Hyde, learning more about him, his plots and plans.  I liked the look that this novel gave us of a bit more higher society.   Not everything is tied up in this series, though several things are clearly being foreshadowed for the end reveal, some of which had started to show in the first book.

Unfortunately, this book is far shorter than the first, and I went through it quite quickly.  All in all, it was a good story, but a very light read.  I would have much preferred that the books kept around the same length, instead of being almost 100 pages lighter from the first to the second.

Review of The Medium by C. J. Archer

The Medium
Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Book 1
By C. J. Archer

Star Rating:
Genre: Fantasy
Number of Pages: 261

Date Started: July 13, 2016
Date Finished: July 18, 2016

Synopsis: (From Amazon)TheMedium_Huge
Seventeen year-old spirit medium Emily Chambers has a problem. Actually, she has several. As if seeing dead people isn’t a big enough social disadvantage, she also has to contend with an escaped demon and a handsome ghost with a secret past. And then there’s the question of her parentage. Being born an entire year after her father’s death (yes, a year) and without the pale skin of other respectable English ladies, Emily is as much a mystery as the dead boy assigned to her.

Jacob Beaufort’s spirit has been unable to crossover since his death. It might have something to do with the fact he was murdered. Or it might not. All he knows is, he has been assigned by the Otherworld’s administrators to a girl named Emily. A girl who can see and touch him. A girl who released a shape-shifting demon into the mortal realm. Together they must send the demon back before it wreaks havoc on London. It should be a simple assignment, but they soon learn there’s nothing simple when a live girl and a dead boy fall in love.

Review:
I wasn’t sure if I’d find this book to my taste after having fallen so very hard for The Ministry of Curiosities book series by C. J. Archer but I certainly wasn’t disappointed!  Emily has a very peculiar talent– she can talk to ghosts.  Archer did an amazing job of showing the very different reactions of society in regards to Emily’s abilities, some asking for her help to talk to deceased loved ones while others are adamant that she is a fraud, no matter what type of personal information from a past loved one she can relate.  While not everyone’s thoughts and feelings can be seen from Emily’s limited point of view, I found that Emily’s reactions were quite genuine for an inexperienced young adult.  Emily is a daring and thoughtful girl, despite knowing she doesn’t have a lot of knowledge about herself, but she doesn’t let being different keep her from doing things, which is a situation most people can relate to being in at one point or another.

I enjoyed this novel and the ending, which leaves the reader with a resolution to the overall problem while leaving questions to wonder about.  Though some say that this isn’t a good tactic, I find that many book series are intertwined, with bits of mystery in the first book that might not be fully explained until the last in the series.  I definitely recommend this book, and look forward to reading the second and third in the series.

Review of Tangled Beauty by K. L. Middleton

Tangled Beauty
Tangled, Book 1
By Charlie N. Holmberg

Star Rating:
Genre: Romance
Number of Pages: 220

Date Finished: July 6, 2016

Synopsis: (From Amazon)tangled
Sinclair Jeffries thought she knew what she was getting into when her zany, gay friend, Jesse Eddington, talked her into portraying his girlfriend during his parent’s anniversary party on Huntington Beach. That is, until she met Reed, Jesse’s sexy as hell older brother, and ends up getting much more than what she’d bargained for.

Reed Eddington assumed his future was settled until he met Sinclair, his brother’s so-called “girlfriend”, but the raw, sexual tension between them is hard to ignore. As he watches their ruse from the sidelines, he finds himself wanting to uncover more than just their amusing little facade.

Due to sexual content and heavy subject matter, this book is recommended for ages 18+. This book has dark humor, romance, and suspense.

Review:
I am still trying to fill the void in me that not being able to instantly continue with The Ministry of Curiosities left.  Unfortunately, I seem to be looking in all the wrong places.  I was really psyched to start this novel.  The premise sounds like it could be quite intriguing but the writing itself is atrocious.

Not only do the characters talk in a way that seems unnatural and odd, but a lot of the novel is filled with clichés, idioms, stereotypes, and unrealistic scenarios that it was almost instantly a book I knew I’d dislike.  Some of these include, but are not limited to: someone outright having a conversation with her “boyfriend’s” mother about how she was adopted, models having bad tempers and only eating vegetables, people in the show business being cheaters and into drugs, and several bits of advice such as “you only have to please yourself” and “women are predictable but most are unpredictable.”  On top of that, there also seems to be no relevant plot, with a villain thrown in seemingly so he can later be in the next book which I will NOT be reading.  A lot is told to the author from the narrator without showing the reader anything, which gets monotonous, boring, and dry.  Even the ending left much to be desired, with the supposedly strong and in charge female protagonist letting go of why she was upset without ever confronting Reed about it.

Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn’t know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from.

When marauders raid her town, Maire is captured and sold to the eccentric Allemas, who enslaves her and demands that she produce sinister confections, including a witch’s gingerbread cottage, a living cookie boy, and size-altering cakes.

During her captivity, Maire is visited by Fyel, a ghostly being who is reluctant to reveal his connection to her. The more often they meet, the more her memories return, and she begins to piece together who and what she really is—as well as past mistakes that yield cosmic consequences.

From the author of The Paper Magician series comes a haunting and otherworldly tale of folly and consequence, forgiveness and redemption.

Review:
I was quite happy when this book appeared on my kindle through the power of pre-order.  I’d just finished all of the books that are out in The Ministry of Curiosities book series, and I had previously been hooked on The Paper Magician series (though I didn’t care as much for the last book).  I had also read Followed By Frost, Holmberg’s first YA book.  Unfortunately, this book was a huge let down.

There was quite a bit of originality with Maire’s baking and what Fyel is, and the banter between them was rather enjoyable.  There were some interesting fairy tale tie ins, that didn’t make sense until near to the very end.  Towards the last fourth of the book the novel shifted and the focus of Maire remembering who she is becomes overshadowed by a desire that had briefly been suggested a few times previously, but hadn’t seemed like a large focus of what Maire wanted in her life.  Given the supposed intense desire Maire has, it makes me a bit apprehensive about claiming this is a book specifically geared towards teens.  Since the characters in this book are in their 20s, this should NOT be considered a teen book.

Although Maire has a special baking ability, she lacks personality and deeper characterization, only focusing on three things: remembering her past, escaping her captor, and baking.  The moral of facing up to your actions and having redemption is great, but the novel suffers from too little time focused on what Maire did and more importantly, not enough of Maire exploring why it was wrong.

Charlie Nicholes Holmberg was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to two parents who sacrificed a great deal to give their very lazy daughter a good education. As a result, Charlie learned to hate uniforms, memorized all English prepositions in alphabetical order, and t mastered the art of Reed-Kellogg diagramming a sentence at age seven. She entered several writing contests in her elementary years and never placed.

Being a nerd, Charlie started writing fan-fiction as a teenager in between episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She became a full-fledged band geek with mediocre talent in high school, where she met her husband Jordan Holmberg. While she strove to win his attention by baking him cookies and throwing ramen noodles at his house, he didn’t actually ask her out until six years later.

Charlie began taking writing seriously during her undergrad at Brigham Young University, where she majored in English and minored in editing. She finally won a few writing contests. She graduated with her BA in 2010 and got hitched three months later. Shortly afterwards, her darling husband dragged her to Moscow, Idaho, where he subsequently impregnated her.

In summer 2013, after collecting many rejection letters and making a quilt out of them, Charlie sold her ninth novel, The Paper Magician, and its sequel to 47North with the help of her wonderful agent, Marlene Stringer. Someday she will own a dog.

(Did she mention her third book, The Master Magician, totally made the WSJ bestseller list? Because it totally made the WSJ bestseller list.)

Charlie is gone, and Lincoln finds that Lichfield Towers offers no sanctuary. With reminders of her at every turn, and employees threatening to mutiny, he must try to find the murderer who is killing supernaturals on his own. And keep the murderer away from Charlie.

When the strongman from the visiting Barnum and Bailey’s circus is murdered, Lincoln suspects a link, but piecing together the clues becomes dangerous and difficult work. He can’t afford to be distracted, yet he finds he can’t concentrate fully on the task. Even worse, Seth’s mother, the incomparable Lady Vickers, has come to stay.

ASHES TO ASHES is a bonus novella-length story, told entirely from Lincoln’s point of view. It is shorter than the rest of the books in the Ministry of Curiosities series.

Review:
This book was a complete shift– everything is from Fitzroy’s perspective.  This book, unlike the last, doesn’t have a complete conclusion, perhaps in part because Charlie isn’t there.  Fitzroy is learning that while he might have gotten along fine on his own, things change when you care about people.  Seth, Gus, and Cook take to being Charlie’s champions and one can only hope that Fitzroy will come off his pedestal and realize that he shouldn’t let her go.  This book left me with more questions than answers.

I had thought that book six was the end of the series, and that I’d get to soak it up as soon as I finished this one.  I was wrong.  The sixth book isn’t due out until August 23rd, and there is no mention of the 6th book being the last one.  I quite wish I could read more now.
