Synopsis:
A duke has been murdered. The lord of Thorn Grove has been framed. And Fate, the elusive brother of Death, has taken up residence in a sumptuous palace nearby. He’s hell-bent on revenge after Death took the life of the woman he loved many years ago…and now he’s determined to have Signa for himself, no matter the cost.
Signa and her cousin Blythe are certain that Fate can save Elijah Hawthorne from wrongful imprisonment, if the girls will entertain Fate’s presence. But the more time they spend with him, the more frightening their reality becomes, as Signa exhibits dramatic new powers that link her to Fate’s past. With mysteries and danger around every corner, the cousins must decide whom they can trust as they navigate their futures in high society, unravel the murders that haunt their family, and play Fate’s unexpected games—all with their destinies hanging in the balance.
Daring, suspenseful, and seductive, this sequel to Death and Signa’s story is as utterly romantic as it is perfectly deadly.
Review:
On one hand, I absolutely loved how there was a sudden murder that has to be solved by Signa and Blythe but on the other I found Fate to be quite insufferable at times. It was quite frustrating how Fate had the power to know and do and fix everything all along yet played a game to try to get what he wanted. While I somewhat suspected part of the twist, something hidden all along, I hadn’t expected who the murderer was! I did have an inclination what deal Fate would have sealed in the end, and while I wasn’t wrong, I still absolutely loved how this book ended. I immediately started the third when this was finished, and I’m quite glad I hadn’t started the series until it was complete.

Death
Saying Goodbye

The hardest part of loving someone is the inevitable loss that death brings. Some may consider pets superfluous, but for many of us they become the closest part of your family- the heart and soul. Boots was more than just a cat. It took a while for Boots to officially join our family, but Boots was the reason I ever even considered getting cats. From the moment I first met her, with her endless talk, headbutts and cuddles, I knew my heart had been stolen.

Boots had a long and full life with my husband, the other cats, and I. She joined countless vocal lessons with an international rock star, stealing her heart. I always said she was the true star- she never needed any corrections! She always had something to say, usually begging (or yowling) for food. She spoke real words, such as “Yeah Yeah” if she wanted something, “yeah yeah yeah” if she REALLY wanted something, “Mmm yeah!” and “No!!!!” She used to curl up against my arm in bed every night as I settled in to read for an hour or so before sleeping. She never found a person she didn’t love, and her life mission was to snuggle everyone and convert them to cat lovers- she even succeeded with my cantankerous grandfather, who she loved to talk on the phone to. Life and the world in general has been dimmed without her light and there will never be another like her.
Death always seems so sudden, even when you see it looming on the horizon. While it may be a reprieve, those living will never know what that “after” consists of, but do feel the gaping wound of the loss of those you loved unconditionally with all your heart. Make certain to spend time with your loved ones, don’t put off activities you’ve been wanting to do with friends and pets, and always give all the love you possibly can; you never know when a moment together might be the last.

When Charlie returns to Lichfield, she steps into chaos. The killer is still on the loose, Lady Harcourt’s secret is out, Seth and Gus are gone, and Lady Vickers has come to stay. But nothing compares to the chaos inflicted on Charlie’s heart by seeing Lincoln every day.
Despite their frequent clashes, Lincoln and Charlie manage to work together to narrow their list of suspects. No one can be trusted, especially not the members of the committee who are not what they seem. Long buried pasts are dug up as Charlie and Lincoln attempt to restore peace to Lichfield.
But when danger enters her home, Charlie’s world is shattered.
Review:
I have come to realize I will never get enough of Charlie. I absolutely adore this series, and this is one of my absolute favourite novels in the series thus far. Every character is so well developed with such depth that the reader cannot help but empathize, even with the ones who might be villains (most of the time).
The reader gets a better glimpse at Lady Harcourt’s true nature, as well as a more intense understanding of the others that make up The Ministry of Curiosities. Although Lichfield is growing more full, it still has an intimate feel, and the characters realize more about how they work together, and how they feel about each other.
When I started the novel I was a bit worried at the angle it seemed to take, which was different from where Charlie and Lincoln’s supernatural stories tend to go, but the tying in of characters and situations when Charlie was away was expertly done. Despite my irritation with Lincoln’s actions and thoughts in the past novel, I do truly feel he redeemed himself. Charlie and Lincoln remain my favourite literary couple, and I cannot wait to see them continue to investigate more cases of the supernatural.

C.J. Archer has loved history and books for as long as she can remember and feels fortunate that she found a way to combine the two. She has at various times worked as a librarian, IT support person and technical writer but in her heart has always been a fiction writer. While she has written historical romance in the past, she now writes exclusively in the historical fantasy genre (with a large dose of romance). She has several series which occur in the same Victorian-era “world”, one after the other. Each series can be read alone, but it’s more fun to start at the beginning with THE EMILY CHAMBERS SPIRIT MEDIUM TRILOGY. Follow that up with all 9 FREAK HOUSE books, then the MINISTRY OF CURIOSITIES series. GLASS AND STEELE, her newest series, is set in an entirely different alternate Victorian London.

Review:
I preordered this book as soon as I heard about it. I absolutely adore Holmberg’s The Paper Magician book series, so naturally I had to read the next thing she wrote, which just so happened to be a retelling of a fairy tale– my weakness!
This book is an amazing detailed coming of age transformation of a once spoiled and conceited girl. Do I think that Smitha deserved the curse she received? Not really. Do I think she grew because of it? Absolutely! Not only does Smitha learn how to rough it and try to take care of herself but she learns about other cultures, other languages, and learns that even when cursed, there is always a way to help others.
While I did adore this book, I wasn’t completely pleased or satisfied with the ending. There is more to life than what Holmberg’s conclusions, both of this novel, and of The Paper Magician seem to suggest.
