Review:
This book was interesting in that the girls are finally away from their mother and yet disaster seems to follow them. I absolutely love that Emma and Jason are so supportive. It seemed that there was quite a lot of info dump on things that just happened to be relevant from the case by the sisters; and Law and Order couldn’t explain this random amount of knowledge. That being said, quite enjoyed all the new supernaturals we got to experience and learn about in this book. What I really didn’t like was Ayla’s returned crappy attitude. I get that she’s supposed to be 14; perhaps she’ll start getting excluded from things because of it. It seemed that a lot of things could be fixed or stop having such hardships if Astra would wear something else; many seem quite threatened by her Decanus outfit and with good reason. We will have to see if that changes in future books…

Review of Born of Water: A Mermaid Fantasy and Elemental Origins Novel by A. L. Knorr

Review:
Firstly, uncertain of the kindle version contains The Wreck of Sybellen, but if it does then it makes total sense that the ending of the book seemed completely at a standstill and apart from the rest of the novel. I quite enjoyed this novel and thought the characters had great depth, and the story itself was well done. The magic system used is well explained by not coming up until it matters; one cannot teach everything about a new subject immediately just because someone else is interested, and there are so many little nuances that you wouldn’t even think of unless they became relevant. I quite loved how many of the things that set Mira apart are traits that are considered mermaid, and since Targa doesn’t seem to share that trait, she understands how different her mother is, but also remains human in her mentality/self.

The book itself is good, though at the end, especially with the particular ending, one is left wondering what really was the goal? A lot happens, but it leaves you wondering about so much still to go on, and it had a very abrupt ending. Given the ending, I feel more inclined to continue with Targa’s story as opposed to continuing the series the book is a first of with her friends because they were not introduced in a way that made me particularly attached to any of them. I am not sure I will continue in either regard at this time, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a good YA novel for someone interested in mermaids/magic/romance.

While there is romance, I did like that it kept to what I would consider the right amount of depth/spice for YA. As an author I do understand that YA is really just a delineate of where to place the books on the shelf/the age of the characters, but I personally do not feel that YA and Romance should be the same books/genre.

Review of From Tormented Tides by Val E. Lane

FTT is a Contemporary Pirate Fantasy with a slow burn romance. Suitable for most upper YA readers.

Review:
I was quite excited for this because it had come up SO OFTEN when I was scrolling tiktok! I was glad that I put this off so I was starting it right around Halloween. I did quite enjoy this book, however, it did seem like it was really geared more towards being a YA book, not even a new adult one. There was some mention of how Trina and her roommate were still getting used to being on their own and didn’t have a lot of complex food/couldn’t cook, but it was almost an aside. If you have watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or watched The Vampire Diaries it seemed very similar in dynamic and feel, except somehow the character is a college Freshman. That being said, there are multiple mentions of missing class, dazing off, but no stakes/repercussions for doing so.

Aside from the very YA feel, the book itself had quite a neat story. The pirates and interlocking back story were well thought out and put together, and I did quite enjoy our main characters. Unfortunately, as we learn more of the past, the little “love triangle” begins to seem far more forced just to have it in, and out of character for the male, though there also isn’t really any sort of connection seen from the female side either. While there is a decent ending, I personally felt like it was expected/contrite. There wasn’t ever the real feeling of danger throughout the book, and I think the overall “mystery” was very obvious from the beginning (or at least once one went into a certain antique shop). All in all, I did like it, but it was far more along the lines of a light YA novel than the potential slow burn romantic fantasy it is pitched as.

On the shore of Lake Erie, I spend my final days hunting beach glass, making jewelry, and waiting for my mermaid glamour to leave me. Then it will be over. I resigned myself to the fact that there’s nothing more for me. Until I saw Cooper.

He comes to the beach every day to paint the sunrise and sunset. Nothing in this vast world has sparked my attention as much as him. I have no business falling in love with a human. Not now. And Cooper seems to have secrets of his own. I should leave him alone, but the curious mermaid in me can’t let that shiny bauble go.

More than anything, I want to be part of his world…before it’s too late.

Review:
This was surprisingly deep for such a short read. This book went through grief, and how people deal with it, how scary and tragic situations can be, and how sometimes you have to be willing to give up everything to help those you love. One of my favourite parts of this novel is how the fairy tale element is clearly there, with one of our protagonists being a mermaid and all, but it isn’t just a retelling. Also the back and forth between Kate and Cooper’s point of view was perfectly executed. All in all, loved it, and think it shows a deep understanding for people going through hard times.

Review:
Oh my goodness. Ms. Foxglove has hit her mark, and I believe this to be her very best of all that I’ve read from her so far.

The combination of The Little Mermaid and selkies is excellently done, adding an extra element and depth to the mermaid’s story that wasn’t there before. What was even more awesome, was that all of the side characters were well developed and fun too. I enjoyed her sisters, and the sea witch– oh the sea witch. The Sea Witch was phenomenal. Is she good? Is she evil? What is she exactly? Read to find out.

The romance is stunning. While Prince Wrindel may have been a playboy it’s difficult for our heroine to care, given how dedicated and attentive he is. Together, they have quite the mystery to solve, while he teaches her the mysteries of her own body.

This book was short, but it was every bit as long as it needed to be absolutely amazing.  If you like fairy tale retellings and romance, this book will be absolutely perfect for you. It’s my favourite by Foxglove so far.
